Wine IGT Toscana Rosso
Vintage 1996
Format 3000 ml

Varietal: 100% Merlot

Another late-ripening year, generally held to be inferior to 1995, but one that yielded once again a great Masseto. It shows even denser and more sumptuous than the 1995, but with a more restrained tannic suite, fully rounded and very compelling. It still exhibits considerable inner resources for further ageing, but it is difficult to restrain oneself from enjoying it right now.

Zone: Bolgheri: at the top of the Masseto hill, at an elevation of about 120 meters above sea level, the soils consist of loose clays and sand with many pebbles, which bless the wine with a marked elegance.

Masseto vineyard enjoys a particular climate. The Mediterranean sun shines over the vines throughout the year while a gentle wind keeps the temperatures moderate during the summer. The fresh soils, together with the mild, generous climate, prevent the vines from suffering in dry conditions, and allow the grapes to ripen gradually. Though unusual for Merlot, these climate conditions will indeed contribute to granting Masseto its enchanting combination of ripeness and freshness.

Aging: The grapes were destemmed and gently pressed and introduced into wooden fermentors where maceration took place over a period of 18-20 days and during which time the wine completed its alcoholic fermentation at a temperature not exceeding 30°C. The wine was then racked and introduced into new French oak barriques where it completed its malolactic fermentation and remained for a period of 24 months, followed by a further 12 months in the bottle before release.

Wine Spectator: 92/100
